Charles Z. Levkoe

Charles Levkoe is the Canada Research Chair in Equitable and Sustainable Food Systems, Member of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada, the Director of the Sustainable Food Systems Lab and an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Sciences at Lakehead University. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Carleton University, The Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto, in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Waterloo and as a Research Associate at the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Charles’ community engaged research uses a food systems lens to better understand the importance of, and connections between social justice, ecological regeneration, regional economies and active democratic engagement. Working directly with a range of scholars and community-based practitioners across North America and Europe, Charles studies the evolution of the broader collective of social movement networks that view the right to food as a component of more sustainable futures. Mobilizing his existing partnerships, he integrates research and teaching through community engaged learning pedagogies and support students, community-partners and scholars to be actively involved in knowledge co-generation. Through community-based, action-oriented inquiry and teaching and the development of placed-based action projects, Charles’ research contributes to critical discussions that inform theory, civil society action and public policy.
